Designed by award-winning architects Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, the Riverlight development, made up of six brightly coloured pavilions, are a welcome addition to this stretch of the river.
The Development
Sitting on a five-acre estate close to Battersea Power Station and the Thames, Riverlight is an exciting residential-led, mixed-use development in London’s largest regeneration programme with more than 60% of the site dedicated to outdoor space.
The development takes it cue from the former industrial warehouse buildings that lined the river in previous centuries with elegant pavilions that range in height from 12 to 20 storeys, giving the scheme a varied skyline. Bright colours are used to emphasise secondary elements such as the underside and leading edges of steel balconies and guide rails to lift units.
There are 806 luxury apartments in the development, from 1 and 2-bedroom apartments with a terrace to 3-bedroom penthouses, most of which have a riverside view thanks to the buildings’ north-south orientation which also maximises sunlight. Glass elevators ensure residents can take in the stunning surroundings as they head home. The outside space and landscaped communal gardens are key to this scheme, with each part of the development having its own distinct character. The public spaces look like a riverbed with pebble-like forms and a plethora of water features, while the private courtyards are calm spaces with heavy tree planting and water gardens. The newly created river walk is a 17m-wide lush boulevard, which is slightly raised to ensure walkers and runners can see over the river wall to the River Thames and beyond.
