From The Ashes Of Disaster - April 2015

Little more than 24 hours after a fire tore through a substantial part of the Battersea Arts Centre (BAC) a performance was put on in the venue’s debating chamber. From that gesture of determination to carry on in the face of heartbreaking destruction much can be learned about BAC and its role in Battersea.

News from the ashes of disaster battersea and nine elms

Pioneering theatre, social and educational hub, and historic landmark, BAC has been a prominent feature of life in southwest London since its conversion from Battersea Town Hall in 1974. Little wonder, then, that the reaction to the fire damage has been so swift and so effective. Individuals donated £50,000 in the days following the fire. Their generosity has since been matched by the owners of Battersea Power Station, who have pledge £100,000 and other assistance to BAC, and the Treasury, which has promised £1m.With the luminaries of BAC putting on an aptly titled Phoenix Fundraiser and the earnest engagement of the local community, Artistic Director David Jubb’s resolute pledge to rebuild ‘brick by brick’ stands a good chance of being fulfilled. With any luck, BAC will be back soon, stronger than ever.
